Weekend Getaway

In October, after I closed out a busy summer season of events, my husband told me to pack my bags for a long weekend in Puerto Rico. He needed to be in San Juan for some business meetings and thought if I joined him, I’d get to decompress after months without a break. Truthfully, Puerto Rico wasn’t on my priority list of travel destinations, and I had a thousand things to do around the house, but the promise of pool time and a few mojitos was enough to convince me to join him.

So I packed my bags… And I am so glad I did. San Juan is a wonderful city! It offers everything you want in a city – hip hotels, interesting restaurants and luxury shopping – along with a gorgeous oceanside setting. We stayed in the Condado district at La Concha, and the hotel in every way surpassed my expectations. I’m not sure what I expected from a hotel in downtown San Juan, but it didn’t include lounge chairs in the form of curtained beds and infinity pools dropping off into sandy beaches.

I was reluctant to do anything but hang by the pool, but my husband came back from his meetings ready for a nice dinner out. Our first night a business associate directed us to Budatai. After googling it quickly, I learned that this was Chef Roberto Trevino’s restaurant. Any of you fellow Iron Chef addicts know he had the guts to take on Mario Batali and that his more than decent performance won him the chance to compete to become this year’s Next Iron Chef. Chef Trevino’s “Nuevo Latino” cuisine is a delicious fusion of Latin and Asian flavors and techniques. And it is not to be missed. We loved the sushi and couldn’t resist trying the “La Rocca” roll, as La Rocca happens to be my maiden name. It featured rock shrimp tempura, tobiko and a wonderful creamy smoky sauce that gave the sushi some Latin flavor and heat. Other favorite dishes included truffle infused pork dumplings and the seared day boat scallopswith Budatai noodles pictured below.

The next day my husband needed to meet someone in Old San Juan, and he dragged me along with him. I had forgotten about Old San Juan. Old San Juan is rich with history, and it happens to be the oldest settlement within the U.S. territories. It also is home to one of our National Parks – the San Juan National Historic Site -- which includes Forts San Cristbal, San Felipe del Morro, and San Juan de la Cruz. These incredible forts date back to 1539 and are named on the World Heritage List as cultural wonders of the world.

For those of you who haven’t been to Old San Juan, it’s a very narrow island off the north coast of Puerto Rico. It’s a bit like a European version of Georgetown, but much older. The streets are narrow and paved with old cobblestones. And like Georgetown, the streets are filled with storefronts, cafes, bars and rowhouses painted in bright colors that just want to make you smile. While walking the city streets, I couldn’t stop looking at doors. I know that sounds strange, but the doors of the homes in Old San Juan are just beautiful. There is something about the juxtaposition of the old European architectural details with what I consider to be modern and Caribbean-style color combinations that is just so inspiring. Celebrating the Bride-To-Be

This is the Year of Weddings for me. Beyond our many beautiful Pineapple weddings, by year-end I will have been to ten weddings for family and friends! While of course I enjoy the actual wedding ceremony and reception, I really love the more intimate parties that precede the big celebration – the bridal showers and the bachelorette weekends. Usually during those parties the bride isn’t anxious or running around to spend a moment with each of her many guests – she’s just enjoying spending time with close friends gushing about her to-die-for dress and her handsome husband-to-be.

One of my favorite bridal showers was a kitchen and bar cocktail party for my friend Leslie at CulinAerie, a cooking school in downtown DC. Guests enjoyed delectable passed hors d’oeuvres and glasses of wine, while mingling and admiring the happy couple’s beautiful engagement photo. The CulinAerie staff then invited all of the guests into the demonstration room, where we learned how to cook the parmesan crisps and other appetizers we had just enjoyed. The evening ended with a sweet treat beyond compare: the mother of the groom had created these bourbon cupcakes decorated with a fondant topper featuring the couple’s initials. A truly delicious evening.

A popular theme I have seen this year is the “Around The Clock” luncheon. This is a great way to ensure that the bride-to-be receives a diverse selection of gifts for her new home, and it’s a good option for a cross-generational guest list. The “Around The Clock” theme is also fun because it encourages guests to be creative with the time that they’re assigned – 5pm means many different things to different people – whether it’s cocktail hour, workout time, the early bird special, or something else! I recently returned from my friend Jessica’s bachelorette weekend at The Shore Club in Miami – it was a fun-filled weekend of celebrating the bride-to-be and pure girliness. During the days we lounged by the pool, working on our tans, flipping through gossip rags and enjoying the fantastic people watching. Then at night we took the bachelorette dancing at some of the many South Beach hot spots. Taverna Opa was the perfect spot for our bachelorette dinner, because between courses of delicious Greek cuisine the lively servers and belly dancers made us dance on the tables! But my personal favorite was the lounge at the Delano Hotel, where the exquisite décor is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, with large tilted mirrors, billowing drapes, an oversized armchair, and chess on the perfectly-manicured lawn. In keeping with Miami’s saucy culture, we showered Jessica with lingerie that will surely keep the newlyweds blissful!

As I’ve showered many of my girlfriends with best wishes this year, I’ve cherished the opportunities their upcoming weddings have presented to spend time with each of them and share in their happiness.

Card Shopping

Thanksgiving is this week and soon it will be December. December, for most, is marked by a flurry of parties and feelings of excitement and anticipation for the holidays. One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is selecting cards, which I send and give to my friends and family. There are so many unique and attractive options available that it is a difficult and tremendously fun decision to make.

These are the cards I sent last year. Exotic animals sport antlers on the cover and inside it reads, “This Christmas, play reindeer games.” They are part of kate spade for Crane & Co. Mrs. Spade’s stationery line is whimsical and smart, not to mention downright charming. For instance, she has a card that features, in big colorful block letters the words, “Hope, Peace, Cookies.” She uses atypical color palettes in her holiday stationery (pink, red, blue, gold and green) to create cards and party invitations that are slightly contemporary, slightly mod, and never too fussy or formal.

Another favorite place to look for holiday card inspiration is Paper Source. They stock a variety of cards, including everything from moss colored cards embossed with pinecones to red and white cards printed with vivid images of peppermint candy canes. These mitten shaped cards appealed to me because of the unusual color combination and graphic snowflake design on the envelopes. Most of Paper Source’s paper is recycled with 30% post-consumer waste, so you can send cards and still feel good about being eco-friendly.

Etsy has a vast number of options, including plenty of handmade and letterpress cards. Some of the stationery sellers that have shops are very creative and are true artists. You can pick up cards that are both affordable and, in some cases, unlike anything you can find in your local stationery store (think embellishments and unusual cutting techniques). Or, if you choose to go a more traditional route, like these simple and elegant letterpress pink snowflake cards, they have plenty of options that fall into that category too.

Although the USPS is issuing season-appropriate stamps, one of my favorite sites is Zazzle, where you can find a greater array of postage options (literally thousands of holiday-themed stamps) to choose from. Select from postage that has already been designed or customize your own set of stamps. We recently had a client who made custom stamps to coordinate with her wedding invitations. She was so happy with how they turned out and they made for a polished overall look.

Sending hand-written holiday cards is a fun tradition that has not gone out of fashion, despite an internet-dependent society. Cards are a lovely way to remind people that you are thinking about them during one of the busiest times of the year.

Un-Corked: Winning Wines for the Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is next week and the invitations for holiday parties are stacking up. The Christmas holidays will quickly follow and then New Year’s Eve parties. As much as I look forward to enjoying some delicious and fabulous meals and the good company of family and friends, I’m really looking forward to the many glasses of wine I’ll be sipping. In addition, I will be in the position of needing to bring a hostess gift to many of these parties. A bottle of wine is my go-to gift for just about everything, but especially so around the holidays.

I do not pretend to be any kind of expert on wine. I didn’t even develop an interest in wine until my early twenties. At the time, I pretty much exclusively drank European wines (mainly French reds) and the occasional Australian shiraz. When I moved to San Francisco in 1999, I knew nothing about California wines. A waiter at my favorite neighborhood restaurant, Frascati, took me under his wing and started to educate me about the local wines. I started to make trips into Napa and Sonoma, and gradually I developed a little more knowledge. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to travel in some of the best wine-producing regions of the world –France, Italy, California, South Africa. I have come to appreciate wine immensely, while recognizing that I still don’t really know anything about it. About eight years ago, I read “The Ripening Sun: One Woman and the Creation of a Vineyard.” Here is a very simple synopsis: An English woman buys a vineyard in the south of France and out of a need to support herself learns how to produce wine. Within that story is an incredible explanation of how the grape is transformed from a simple piece of fruit into an award-winning sip of wine. I have never enjoyed a glass of wine since without thinking about how much work went into making it.

Here in D.C., I have the good fortune to work with Ace Beverage for just about every event and the occasional personal request. Noel and his colleagues are invaluable in putting together the best options for every need – from standard event bars to tequila tasting bars to specialty dinner wines to splits of champagne for the out-of-town guest amenity. Here are a few questions I had for Noel about wine-purchasing and trends.
Q: What should people consider when purchasing wine as a gift?
A: When buying wine as a gift, it helps to consider any preferences you or the recipient might have. For example, do you want to give red, white or sparkling? Do you have a budget? Is there a particular varietal of interest or a country of origin you would like to consider? All of these can help identify the wines that would be a good fit. A gift can be about sharing something you love or trying to find a connection with an interest of the recipient. For example if the recipient loves traveling in Italy, they might appreciate that you acknowledged this with an Italian wine.
Q: I think a lot of people are intimidated by wine because they don’t know much about it. What do you recommend for overcoming this trepidation?
A: If you don’t know where to start, start with what you know. What wines have you enjoyed or disliked? Working with a knowledgeable salesperson, you can start to expand your own tastes and knowledge from there. At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the wine.
Q: What are some of the trends you’re seeing in wine (e.g. new varietals, new production areas getting acclaim, etc)?
A: The hottest trends right now are Malbec, Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio and Prosecco.
Q: What are some of the trends you’re seeing in wine-buying (more people buying certain varietals, budget-focused, etc)?
A: There is a good bottle of wine at almost every price point. We have definitely seen an increase in the more affordable wines in terms types and brands available.
Q: Any other tips or advice you would like to share?
A: Beware of “fancy” packaging or labels. Most of the time it’s just a gimmick to sell inferior product.

Holiday Gift

The rich perfume is supported by concentrated and focused layers of peach and apricot nectar, pear and green melon with spicy vanilla notes. On the palate there is integration of strong, deep, concentrated fruit in a perfect balance. Super fine tannin grips the palate, with ripe, round flavors that dance right on the seam between classic Bordeaux and California styles. There’s nice harmony and balance, with a malty aftertaste. Drink now through 2010. 90 points by Wine Spectator (via bedfordwines.com)

Over the years, I have maintained a short list of favorite wines. Here are just a few of the bottles I always have on hand.
I love every bottle of Ridge wine I have ever tasted. My family joined their wine Club last year and this keeps me in good supply. A former colleague gave me my first bottle of Ridge for Christmas one year.
At Casa Lapostolle the founders and owners of the world-renowned liqueur Grand Marnier use French vines and technique in Chile to produce fantastic reds under the Casa Lapostolle and Clos Apalta labels. A big thank you to the sommelier at The Old Stone Farmhouse on St. Thomas for first introducing me to this wine.
Chalk Hill Chardonnay goes well with just about everything or can be enjoyed on its own.  Thanks to my Uncle Paul and Aunt Babs for introducing me to it many Thanksgivings ago.

Whatever your knowledge or preference, I hope you’ll have the opportunity to try some new wines this holiday season.

Venue Versatility – National Museum of Women in the Arts

We truly are fortunate to have so many wonderful event venues in the greater D.C. area. One of my favorites is the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

In addition to being beautiful, the museum is also one of the most versatile spaces. Between the Great Hall, the Mezzanine, the Elizabeth Kasser Room and the Third Floor Galleries, you can accommodate anything from a small cocktail party to a wedding to a large gala. With the Performance Hall, the museum has a unique advantage for hosting corporate and non-profit fundraising events with speaker programs.

Each event that I plan at the museum has used the space in some new way. And with each event, I have found new inspiration – either from an exhibit or an architectural detail or a comment from a guest.

One of the things that I have found most amazing is how well the Renaissance Revival décor adapts to the varied tastes of my clients. It is obviously, quite lovely for someone with traditional, romantic or grand Old World taste, but it is perhaps surprisingly equally fabulous for the client with a more contemporary, stream-lined taste.

Below are just a few examples from recent events of the versatility and beauty of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Turquoise and Copper

My girlfriend and hostess extraordinaire Jennifer Stricklin was telling me about an event she was throwing at her home in Chicago. She was planning to use a color palette of turquoise, copper, espresso brown and cream. I’m always looking for new color palettes to consider for parties and events, and this combination sounded so gorgeous and versatile.

Turquoise, coral and white is a classic look, but it’s very limited to the summer season and maybe best saved for a beach inspired party. However, if you deepen the turquoise and change the coral to burnt orange, copper or sienna brown, the palette suddenly becomes relevant for other seasons.

I went in search of pretty things with turquoise and copper in mind and found some great images. Dark turquoise and sunset orange with creamy ivory and mahogany has an exotic feel totally appropriate for the islands without being overtly beachy. I think it would be the perfect palette for a winter destination wedding at a Caribbean resort. The images below make me excited for this weekend’s work trip to the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida.

Another take on turquoise is peacock blue. Peacock blue is a statement color, whether worn, painted on walls or incorporated into an event look. It’s so refined and so gorgeous with coppery red or matte metallic copper. I don’t usually love chair dressing, but I adore the cameos and peacock blue silk sashes on ceremony chairs from one wedding designed by Kabrel Polak and featured on Style Me Pretty. And that Lela Rose dress and Celestina clutch is what I want to wear to this year’s round of holiday parties.

Late Night Bites

After a long night of dancing and mingling, there is nothing more enticing than a tasty midnight snack. A few of our clients have recognized the allure of late night nibbling by offering guests comforting treats at the conclusion of a great party.

For an event at Oxon Hill Manor in June, Susan Gage Caterers assembled a classic combination of bite-sized grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied by ice-cold glass bottles of Coca-Cola. Guests were handed the snacks as they boarded shuttles back to their hotels. What a memorable way to cap off the night!

Last September, Connie and Aidan’s wedding reception took place at the St. Regis in Washington, DC. As the last few songs of the night were played by the band, sliders and mini vanilla milkshakes were passed out to guests on the dance floor. The St. Regis presented the two-sip milkshakes in perfectly sized shot glasses. Wedding guests went crazy for the late night surprise!

In December, Samantha and Steve held their wedding reception at the Stephen Decatur House on Lafayette Square. Snow flurries fell from the sky on the evening of their wedding. At the end of the night, guests were sent out into the cold armed with made-to-order cappuccinos, brewed freshly by Design Cuisine, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts packaged in customized paper cups and bags. It was an appropriately cozy conclusion for a winter event.

Late night snacks are a fun alternative to a more traditional favor. Guests, especially those who have kicked up their heels all night, are bound to be surprised and grateful when they are presented with clever and craveable delights.

Game Night

This dreary weather makes me want to hole up in my apartment and hibernate until the spring thaw.  I’m fighting that instinct, though, and instead inviting friends over for Game Night.  What is better on a rainy night than playing board games with friends and enjoying some comfort food?  I will be the first to admit that I can get a bit too competitive at times, though!  Here are my top 10 games for a fun-filled night:

With all of this acting, drawing, miming and inevitable laughing, Game Night munchies are a must, so there will be bowls of chips and salsa and popcorn around the room for the nervous nibblers.  Then we’ll take a break from the fun to enjoy my favorite cold-weather cuisine: a delicious Santa Fe Soup recipe that my aunt Debbie gave me.  I love the recipe because it’s simple, allowing me to concentrate on winning rather than fussing over it all night.  Santa Fe Soup is always a crowd pleaser and it will make more than enough, so that I’ll have leftovers to enjoy during the week! 

Santa Fe Soup
2 lb ground meat (I use half beef/half turkey)
1 large onion

1 oz package of ranch seasoning
1 oz package of taco seasoning
16 oz can diced tomatoes with chilis
16 oz can diced tomatoes
16 oz can pinto beans
16 oz can kidney beans
16 oz can black beans
16 oz package frozen white corn

Brown the meat with the diced onion.  Drain the grease, then mix in the seasoning packets.  Add all of the beans and corn, with the liquid.  Cook on low for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.  Top with sour cream, scallions and/or Tabasco to taste.

New York State of Mind

I’m super excited to be heading to New York for the weekend. I try to go several times a year to get my “fix” – my shopping, eating, nightlife fix that is. I visited NY regularly growing up, but it wasn’t until I lived there right after college that the city truly became a part of me. This weekend, I plan to spend some quality time with one of my best friends and cheer on another friend who is running the NY marathon, while squeezing as many minutes out of the day as possible eating, shopping and partying my way around the city. New York truly is the city that never sleeps, so it shouldn’t be too hard to do! Here are just a few of the things I’m looking forward to doing this weekend:

Whenever my parents would visit me in NY we would have brunch at Blue Water Grill. Now, it's a tradition I gladly uphold.  It never disappoints. The lobster bisque and the ginger and soy-lacquered sea bass are my usual, and as a bonus, there is always somebody famous there - I’ve had the pleasure of eating next to the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Uma Thurman.

When I’m in NY, I am always torn between going back to my favorite restaurants and trying some of the amazing new places that are constantly opening. With Fall weather upon us in earnest, I am looking forward to returning to one of my favorites.  Craft is just good food (plus, I have a huge foodie crush on Tom Colicchio) - perfectly cooked seasonal items, simply presented resulting in the most satisfying dining experience.  I highly recommend the lamb ravioli and beef short ribs!

I’ve never bought a single thing by Kate Spade, but recently I have been tagging pictures all over the blogosphere of her clothes, her ads and her own interior decor. I guess it just took me a while to appreciate her use of color and eclectic, yet clean pairings.  I can't wait to be inspired at her flagship store.

Takashimaya is a Japanese department store that I love to browse through. They always have the most interesting and unique fashion and home accents.

Now that I'm inspired, I'm ready to spend.  I actually do my best shopping at the budget-friendly trendy shops like TopShop, H&M, Mango and Zara. 

My favorite neighborhood place for drinks is ñ (33 Crosby St., no website) in SoHo. It’s the size of a closet, but the low-key vibe and fantastic sangria are perfect for tucking into a corner and catching up with friends.

As the wee hours approach, it’s usually time for late-night drinks and dancing somewhere fabulous in the Meatpacking District (which I rely on my NY friends to lead me to as I have no clue).

Lately I have seen some of the most creative escort cards! I love any detail that adds a personal touch, and escort cards are a great way to do so while continuing the look and color palette of a wedding in a fun, creative way. 

One of my absolute favorites was at my friend Katie’s wedding at the Audubon Naturalist Society’s Woodend Sanctuary. Her mother, Laura Anthony, is a wonderful artist, and she and her friend Nancy Murphy painted a guest’s name and a specific bird on each escort card to signify their table assignment. It was a labor of love, as was the attached favor for each guest: home-baked cookies and the recipes for the mother of the bride’s and the mother of the groom’s signature confections. The ensemble was both beautiful and delicious!

Another favorite was a creation we did with Jack Lucky of Jack Lucky Floral Design. For a summer wedding at a bride’s waterfront home in Easton, Maryland, we continued the couple’s color palette of citrus green, lemon yellow and white by creating a display of white crates filled with stephanotis blossoms and lemons pinned with leaf escort cards, which were calligraphed in a whimsical font by Kathryn Murray.

For another recent Pineapple wedding, the couple commissioned Nancy Howell to illustrate the event floorplan and calligraph the guest names and table numbers on separate sheets of paper, which were then sewn on a burlap-covered board with red yarn. The couple can also frame the drawing as a special memento from their wedding day. 

Sweet Dreams

Last Month I had the incredible opportunity to channel my inner Amy Atlas and design and produce a fabulous dessert bar for one of my wedding clients. Of course, we had a huge advantage in that the mother of the bride owns a local bakery and put herself and her staff at the whim of our creativity. We took our inspiration from several places, including pictures we found in magazines and on blogs, the bride’s navy, yellow and white color palette and subtle nautical motif, the quilted butter yellow linens we had chosen for the dinner tables and, of course, the favorite confections of the bride and groom. The final display was beautiful, whimsical and delicious!

My Anton Ego Moment

Recently I had what I’ve come to call my “Anton Ego moment.” For those of you familiar with Disney Pixar’s hilarious animated adventure Ratatouille, you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, a brief explanation…

In Ratatouille’s version of the Paris food scene, Anton Ego is a perpetually grouchy and jaded restaurant critic feared by all and widely known as “The Grim Eater.” Ego decides he will review Gusteau’s -- once the culinary juggernaut in Paris, but now a restaurant quickly losing its luster and reputation.

A classic Ego quote from the movie occurs when he tells chef Linguini (and Linguini’s secret helper, Remy the rat) that he will be reviewing the restaurant.

“I don't like food, I love it. If I don't love it, I don't swallow.”


Ego returns the next night and is served Remy the rat’s brilliant version of the humble peasant dish, ratatouille. Ego looks at his plate curiously, takes one bite and freezes. He suddenly is transported back to his childhood days when his mother prepared the same dish in the south of France. All of Ego’s cynicism is washed away, and he sheds one solitary tear of joy.


Well, I’m not exactly the critic Ego is, but I attend my share of catering tastings -- and while always appreciative of the opportunity to be part of a tasting, let’s just say a person can only eat so many filet mignons and potatoes anna. That’s why I was so blown away by a recent tasting at Occasions Caterers.

I was at Occasions to participate in a tasting of the suggested wedding menu for Brook and Brian, a couple who will soon be relocating to Costa Rica. Eric Michael and Joel Wolke of Occasions custom-designed a fabulous, original, and intentionally unfussy menu of island-spiced pulled chicken with masa, black beans and rice and the best sweet plantains I think I have ever had. But not even the plantains prepared me for what would happen next. I was passed a platter of gorgeous late summer vegetables, a mix of kabocha squash, green beans and shiitake mushrooms. Just as I was serving myself some vegetables, I noticed they seemed to have been tossed in a sunflower seed vinaigrette. I took a bite and nearly dropped my fork.

Just like Ego, a deeply embedded food memory transported me back to my early childhood, and it was a surprisingly emotional moment for me. The chef at Occasions had served up nearly the same dressing my mother used every time she made a salad for our family. And that was pretty much every day of my young life.

Below my mother participates in a photo shoot for Better Homes and Gardens (1978), surely pretending to make the salad with sunflower seed dressing.

And also a few test Polaroids from another BHG photo shoot (circa 1976) – these featuring my mother and younger brother. As I got older, my brother became part of the reason sunflower seeds remained around. He grew up to be a baseball player, and munching sunflower seeds was a dugout ritual.

Getting back to the dish created by Occasions…even if you take away my personal connection to the sunflower seed vinaigrette, this roasted vegetable salad is the perfect addition to any fall cocktail buffet. It’s chock full of healthy stuff, colorful and delicious! Consider calling Occasions – as I did last week – and having them prepare it for you next time you are entertaining and need an impressive side dish. Or visit your local farmers’ market over the weekend, pick up whichever seasonal vegetables look good to you, roast the vegetables and toss them in this simple vinaigrette. Then sprinkle with roasted sunflower seeds. The salad will taste equally great served warm or at room temperature.

Melissa’s Dressing  (recipe courtesy of my mother)

½ cup sunflower oil or good quality olive oil

Juice from one fresh lemon, about 2 tbsp.

Kosher salt to taste

Freshly ground pepper to taste

Roasted sunflower seeds

Whisk the oil into the lemon juice gradually, in a slow stream. Salt and pepper to taste. Toss vegetables or leafy greens in dressing, and sprinkle with sunflower seeds.
